How to Properly Care for Your Dental Implants

How To Properly Care For Your Dental Implants

When you’ve lost a tooth, finding a replacement that feels and looks like the real deal is game-changing. You can smile with confidence knowing nobody can tell the difference – sometimes yourself included. That’s how it feels to have dental implants. But, how is taking care of your dental implants different than caring for your regular teeth? Does taking care of your dental implants change from taking care of dentures?

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Contrary to dentures, dental implants are semi-permanent solutions that are designed to look and feel like real teeth. That’s because they use titanium to bond with your jawbone and create a more stable and durable teeth solution. Since dental implants bond with your jawbone, you can’t remove them and clean them like you would dentures. In some instances, dental implants can be done in a single day and have you eating foods only hours after the surgery.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Four STEPS FOR SINGLE IMPLANTS

Step 1. Brush two-three times a day.

Similar to how you would brush your normal teeth, brush in a circular motion around the gum line of your dental implant. This should dislodge any food or plaque leftover from meals.

Step 2. Floss daily.

Using unwaxed floss, implant-specific floss, or a Waterpik, floss around your dental implant. This will remove any excess food or plaque that brushing couldn’t dislodge.

Step 3. Wear a night guard or retainer.

If you’re prone to grinding or clenching your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about getting a night guard or retainer. This can help alleviate pressure at night and protect your dental implant from stress.

Step 4. Schedule routine checkups.

Visit your dentist every six months to ensure your mouth, gums, and teeth are healthy. Many conditions, including smoking, can cause implant failure. You should notify your dentist immediately if you notice any changes.

Five STEPS FOR DENTURES

Step 1. Remove dentures after each meal.

Remove and rinse your dentures after each meal to eliminate food and prevent plaque buildup. Be careful handling your dentures as not to bend or break any of the clasps.

Step 2. Brush two-three times a day.

While your dentures have been removed, brush your teeth in a circular motion along the gum line – making sure to get around your teeth and remove excess food.

Step 3. Clean your dentures.

At least once a day, clean your dentures using a soft-bristled brush and nonabrasive denture cleanser. This will remove any food or excess plaque accumulated throughout the day.

Step 4. Soak your dentures overnight.

Using water or a mild-denture soaking solution, place your dentures in the solution to soak overnight. Not all dentures need to be soaked, so you should check with your dentist on your specific denture maintenance. Rinse your dentures thoroughly with clean water before putting them back in your mouth.

Step 5. Schedule routine checkups.

Visit your dentist every six months to ensure your mouth, gums, and teeth are healthy. If your dentures become loose or unstable, you should contact your dentist immediately.
