Physical Activity to Avoid After Dental Implants

Dental implants are an exciting investment for a person because they can literally help you create a new outlook on life! While you may be eager to get out and do everything with your new smile, the truth is that directly after implant placement, your new smile is still physically adjusting and healing in your mouth over the next few months.

Yes, many people know what they should and shouldn’t eat after dental implants. But did you know that there are actual activities you should avoid, many of which don’t even directly involve your smile?

Here’s a look at some of the top activities to avoid directly after dental implant placement.

Vigorous Tooth Brushing With Dental Implants

Yes, you are going to want to try to keep your new teeth as white as possible. While it is difficult to actually stain your All-on-4 dental implants, many people still have that mental image of having to literally dig into their teeth with a toothbrush in order to get a cleaner whiter look.

Although directly after dental implants you can lightly brush your teeth and use mouthwash, avoid roughly brushing the implant site in order to prevent discomfort, bleeding and potential implant failure.

Can I Have Sex After Dental Implant Surgery?

As excited as you may be to show off your new teeth to your partner, at least for the first week, do so from a smiling distance. Although sexual activity isn’t something that people usually associate with dental implants, any activity that gets the blood pumping throughout the body is going to lead to problems during the recovery process.

We don’t recommend exercising until at least a week after your implant surgery. In this instance, sexual intercourse is a form of exercise. It gradually increases the pulse in your bloodstream and said increased flow will result in your surgery site bleeding.

Oral sex is also something to avoid during the first weeks of recovery because your wounds are still prone to infection and trauma.

Lifting Heavy Objects After Dental Implant Surgery

As we mentioned before exercise gets the blood flowing in an uncomfortable way for your dental implants. However, lifting heavy objects like weights or furniture can have even more dire effects on your new smile.

Lifting heavy objects is one of the most dangerous things you could do for your dental implants because doing so, most people naturally clench and unclench their jaw throughout the process. Doing this directly after your dental implant surgery can lead to ripped stitches, bleeding, and immense pain.

We suggest waiting at least a month before attempting to hit the gym again or lift any heavy objects at home or at work.
