What Holiday Foods are Bad for Your Teeth?

Let Fast New Smile® give you the smile you deserve

Christmas is just around the corner and at our Dental Implant Center, we’re getting excited for the holidays! The tasty treats that are passed around and general merriment of the season is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Even though we all enjoy the decadent desserts that seem to make their way into every home and office, it can be a tooth’s worst nightmare.

For people that have recently had dental implant surgery, it can be bad for the health of the tooth implant. Here are a few foods you should avoid this holiday season.

Avoid Foods that Might Have Surprises Inside

Have you ever bitten into something assuming there was no risk to your teeth only to find out that something hard like a nut was hidden inside? It hurts and can crack your teeth. While dental implants are incredibly strong, it’s best to avoid foods that could compromise their strength.

Things like olives or cherries that have pits inside should be avoided. Also, be careful when biting into a cookie because there might be something hard on the inside that you can’t see from the outside.

Stay Away From Sticky Foods

Sticky foods like toffee or caramel are a nightmare to chew and remove from your teeth regardless of if you have custom dentures or real teeth. They wear at a tooth’s enamel and are all around terrible for your mouth’s health.

Consider something else in place of the chewy caramel. If you have a major sweet tooth, it’s better to indulge in chocolate because it won’t stick quite as much.

Opt for Red Wine Instead of White

White wine is very acidic and more likely to compromise the health of your teeth. Red wine provides health benefits that you simply can’t get from a drink as acidic as white wine. For example, red wine kills bad bacteria in your mouth, thus improving the overall health of your gums, tongue, and teeth.

Watch Out for Popcorn

Popcorn itself isn’t bad for your teeth or mouth. However, the little unpopped kernels that somehow end up in your mouth can crack your natural teeth or compromise your single tooth implants. If you really want to snack on some popcorn, eat it slowly, piece by piece to avoid biting into a hard kernel.
